Lorem Ipsum Generator

Generate placeholder paragraphs, sentences, words or list items, as plain text or HTML. The same options always give the same text, so a mockup is repeatable.

Generate placeholder text for a layout: paragraphs, sentences, words or list items, as plain text or HTML.

How to use

  1. Pick what you need. Paragraphs for body copy, sentences for a card, words for a heading, list items for a menu or a feature list.
  2. Set the count. Up to two hundred units at a time.
  3. Choose plain text or HTML. HTML wraps paragraphs in p tags and writes list items inside a real ul.
  4. Keep the classical opening on if you want the text to be recognisable as placeholder. Turn it off when you are testing how real content will look.
  5. Copy it in. The same settings always give the same text, so two screenshots of the same layout match.

Example

Three paragraphs, plain text, classical opening on, begins:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet consectetur adipiscing elit, veniam nostrud laboris ea. Reprehenderit voluptate velit esse cillum eu fugiat nulla pariatur. …

The same three paragraphs in HTML come out as three p elements, one per line, ready to paste into a template.

Pitfalls

  • Placeholder text hides real problems. Names that are longer than the space, a product title with no spaces, a paragraph of one sentence: none of those show up in lorem ipsum.
  • Latin words are shorter and more even than English ones, so a design that fits lorem ipsum can overflow with real copy. Add a few long words when you test.
  • Lorem ipsum in a live page is an SEO liability and an embarrassment. Search it before launch; it is the most-shipped placeholder in the world for a reason.
  • Non-Latin layouts need non-Latin placeholder. Arabic, Hebrew, Japanese and Thai have different line heights, word wrapping and character widths.
  • Accessibility tools read placeholder text aloud like anything else. A screen reader user testing your prototype gets nonsense, which is worth saying out loud before the session.
  • This text is deliberately deterministic. If you want a different sample at the same length, change the count and change it back, or turn the classical opening off.
  • Word counts are not character counts. Twelve Latin words is around eighty characters; twelve English words in a heading can be twice that.
  • The HTML output has no classes. Add your own rather than styling bare p tags, or the placeholder will look better than the real thing.

Compatibility

Plain text output is text. The HTML output is a fragment: p elements, or a ul with li children, with no wrapper element and no attributes, which pastes into any template or editor. Everything is generated in your browser with no request and no upload.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the text the same every time?
Because a repeatable mockup is more useful than a random one. Change the count to change the text.
Is it real Latin?
It is Latin-shaped. The passage comes from Cicero by way of a printer’s sample, and the words are real Latin with the grammar removed.
Can I get more than two hundred paragraphs?
Not here; that much filler is a stress test rather than a design. Generate it in a loop in code if you need it.
Should I use lorem ipsum at all?
For layout, yes. For content decisions, no: use real copy, or copy of a realistic length, as soon as you can.
Does the HTML include a wrapper?
No. You get the elements themselves, so they inherit whatever container you paste them into.
