Unix Timestamp Converter

Convert Unix timestamps to readable dates and dates back to epoch seconds or milliseconds, in any timezone.

Enable JavaScript to customise; default output below.

Seconds, milliseconds, microseconds or nanoseconds; an ISO date with optional time and offset; or now.

Shows the date in this timezone and reads dates without an offset as local time here.

Auto picks the unit from the number of digits.

Read input as Unix timestamp (seconds)

Output is valid and updates as you type.

Paste a Unix timestamp to see the date it stands for, or type a date to get its epoch value. The converter works out whether a number is in seconds, milliseconds, microseconds or nanoseconds and shows the result in UTC and the timezone you pick. Nothing is sent to a server.

How to use

  1. Enter a timestamp such as 1700000000, a date such as 2026-09-17 14:30, or now.
  2. Pick a timezone. Dates you type without an offset are read as local time in that zone.
  3. Open More options if a number is in a unit that auto-detection gets wrong.
  4. Copy the result or share a link that reopens the same conversion.

Example

The timestamp 1700000000 converts to:

Unix timestamp (s) 1700000000
Unix timestamp (ms) 1700000000000
ISO 8601 (UTC) 2023-11-14T22:13:20.000Z
RFC 2822 (UTC) Tue, 14 Nov 2023 22:13:20 +0000

Pitfalls

  • JavaScript’s Date.now() returns milliseconds, while PHP’s time() and most databases use seconds. Mixing them puts dates in 1970 or far in the future.
  • A timestamp is always UTC. The timezone only changes how the same moment is displayed.
  • Dates without an offset are ambiguous. 2026-03-08 02:30 does not exist in New York because clocks skip that hour.
  • 32-bit systems that store seconds in a signed integer overflow on 19 January 2038.

Compatibility

Accepts integer and decimal timestamps, ISO 8601 dates with optional time, fractional seconds and Z or ±HH:MM offsets, and RFC 2822 date text. Supported dates run from year 1 to year 9999. Timezone data comes from your browser.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Unix timestamp?
The number of seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970, not counting leap seconds. It is also called epoch time or POSIX time.
How do I get the current timestamp?
Type now in the input. In code, use time() in PHP, Math.floor(Date.now() / 1000) in JavaScript or date +%s in a shell.
How does auto-detection choose the unit?
Up to 11 digits is read as seconds, 12 to 14 as milliseconds, 15 to 17 as microseconds and longer numbers as nanoseconds. Pick a unit under More options to override it.
How do I convert a timestamp in WordPress?
Use wp_date( 'Y-m-d H:i', $timestamp ), which formats the timestamp in the site’s timezone setting.
